About
Luanne Dominix is a visual artist based in Conception Bay North, Newfoundland and Labrador. Through watercolour paintings she examines the relationships between natural resources, material culture, and identity within rural coastal communities. Her process is research driven and grounded in field observation. The resulting paintings examine how labour, memory, and ecological change leave subtle traces in the everyday.
Her work has been exhibited in juried exhibitions across Canada and the United States including with the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, the Society of Watercolor Artists, the Federation of Canadian Artists, the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair, as well as The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery. Dominix’s work is held in public collections including The Rooms Provincial Art Bank, the City of St. John’s, and Eastern Health - MHAC.
Artist Statement
My work explores the quiet evidence of human presence in the landscape and the ways labour, culture, and everyday practices shape our understanding of place. I examine how objects, environments, and traditions carry traces of the lives that formed them.
Foodways often serve as an entry point into this investigation. Scenes such as fish drying on a line or the preparation of a meal reflect traditions that connect people to the land, work, and community. These images hold tension between tenderness and discomfort, beauty and the grotesque. They ask viewers to consider where food comes from and the systems that shape its journey.
My research often begins outside the studio. I visit sites of work and daily activity including wharves, farms, kitchens, and coastal landscapes. There, I document and often participate in traditional practices. Photography, sketching, and written notes serve as field records that are integral to my painting process.
Back in the studio, these observations are translated through a slow and deliberate watercolour process. Layers of pigment allow images to emerge gradually, balancing control with unpredictability. Through this process, lived experience is distilled into quiet images that hold traces of labour, memory, and human presence.
Across my work I am interested in how landscapes and objects become vessels of cultural memory. Food traditions, plants, as well as the subtle marks left by daily life reflect the ways people shape a place and how those traces remain long after the moment has passed.
