About

Luanne Dominix is a visual artist based in Conception Bay North, Newfoundland and Labrador. Her work examines the relationships between natural resources, material culture, and identity within rural coastal communities. Her process is research driven and grounded in field observation. The resulting paintings examine how labour, memory, and ecological change leave subtle traces in the everyday.

Her work has been exhibited in juried exhibitions across Canada and the United States including with the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, the Society of Watercolor Artists, the Federation of Canadian Artists, the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair, as well as The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery. Dominix’s work is held in public collections including The Rooms Provincial Art Bank, the City of St. John’s, and Eastern Health - MHAC. She is a recipient of Riddle Fence’s annual visual art award. In 2025, her first solo exhibition, With Quiet Hands, was presented at Eastern Edge’s rOGUE Gallery.

Artist Statement

My work explores the quiet evidence of human presence in the landscape and the ways labour, culture, and daily practices shape our understanding of place. I examine how objects, coastal environments, and traditions carry the subtle imprints of the lives that formed them.

Foodways often serve as an entry point into this investigation. The acts of preparing, processing, and consuming food connect us deeply to the land, to our labour, and to our communities. My paintings hold a deliberate tension between tenderness and discomfort, beauty and the grotesque. This prompts viewers to consider the systems that shape these daily rituals.

My research begins outside the studio. I visit sites of activity including: wharves, farms, kitchens, and shorelines in order to document, participate in, and learn traditional regional practices. I use photography, sketching, and written notes as field records of these experiences.

In the studio, these observations are translated through a slow, layered watercolour process. The building of transparent pigments allows images to emerge gradually. I balance strict control with the unpredictability of the medium. Through this practice, lived experience is distilled into quiet images where the natural and built environment become enduring evidence of cultural memory.
